International Day 11 May 2024

By: Rosie Joly

As the world prepared for Eurovision 2024, in a small corner of Spain in San Fulgencio on the Urbanization of La Marina, another musical event was taking place, just on a much smaller scale, and of course, a little less flamboyant. Despite the sun being reluctant to appear until later in the afternoon, it didn’t stop the community coming together to celebrate International Day.

Hosted by San Fulgencio Council and local dignitaries, the day provided entertainment for all, with paella and drinks flowing freely. Presiding over the proceeding was Paulino a well know local Councillor and resident. Many local organisations were presented with a plaque from the Council, recognising their charitable activities, hard work, and commitment to improving the wellbeing of citizens in the area. Formed just 20 months ago the Costa Blanca Singers were also recognised by the Council for our work, and our very own Lonée, gracefully received the award on behalf of all members of the group.

With the formalities over, the Costa Blanca Singers, rocked the event with a selection of songs which represented the multinational membership of our singing community, leaving the audience calling for more. Of course, many wonderful artists gave up their time, to entertain the audience, with contributions from the Ukrainian community and so many others. Our thanks go to everyone involved in organising the event, and we look forward to 2025.

Saturday’s event was significant in so many ways, as we live through a time of much uncertainty, conflict, and tragedy, particularly in Europe. The overriding message was clear. We must continue to work together as a community in the spirit of friendship, peace, and harmony.

On Saturday 11 May 2024 the community of San Fulgencio/La Marina was indeed ‘United by Music’ proving that music breaks down the barriers of both language and culture, so that we can co-exist peacefully, and united, as one.
